Making it easy for your prospects to find you

Derek Brown | | May 29, 2017

The Internet is an enormous and global entity. There are trillions of web pages and billions of web sites, which can be accessed via your web browser. Optimizing your site for search engines is an important way that potential customers can find you.

When using a web browser search engine, each is mathematically calculated to produce search results based on certain specific criteria. The right SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on your website will mean the difference between showing up on page one, and potentially not showing up at all when a prospective customer comes virtually knocking.

What is Search?
This refers to the act of looking for your website, or for the websites of people in your industry. For instance, a potential customer would load a search engine such as Google, and type into the search box “manufacturing and machine shop companies."

The list of results that come up are determine by hundreds of factors that search engines look at. SEO helps make your site 'popular' with search engines so that it is among the top results, and people can find your company.

What is SEO?
On the Internet, you must sell not only your product and service, but also your website. With the right SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, you can attract valuable new leads. As mentioned above, good SEO makes the web search engines bring your website closer to the top of the search results.

SEO has been shown to have a better ROI than TV and print ads. It can give you the visibility you need to grow your company, and with that, establish the branding that will make you stand out. Website SEO also offers you, the business owner, with invaluable insights into customer behavior online.

There is importance in having your website appear when related searches are made. Many times when looking for a product or service, a person will actually enter several search terms, separately, into the search engine and see the results. Having your results pop up using a variety of related search words gives you extra exposure. You become memorable. It is more likely that your site will be clicked on, and because it was seen the most out of various searches, it is linked in the mind with trustworthiness.

How does a well-maintained website translate into sales?

It is the same concept of exposure as we mentioned previously. If your website is poorly maintained and not actively online, even though your SEO may be gold, no one can get to it.

When someone searches and they find a website that is offline, they are accustomed to never going back to that site. Especially if they have not heard of your company before, a potential customer is going to assume that your company is no longer in business, or less reputable because your site is unreliable. Online presence equals reliability. If your website is unreliable, potential customers will quickly start to think that your company is unreliable, too.
